DeJonge and Miller give fantastic performances, particularly the latter who was clearly enjoying the role. It's well shot, with technical inventiveness, and includes a rather funny screenplay, but above all it is fun. Frequently, the pacing does dip and takes some time for the thrills to build back up. Also, as elaborate as the conclusion was, it just wasn't believable. A disposable thriller that injects some blood-soaked holiday spirit into Christmas.
Our eclectic dirty dozen, including a French murder mystery, a Canadian horror classic and an anime retelling of the Christmas story, are the perfect counterprogramming for anyone looking for new ideas this festive season. "There is no holiday without "Home Alone". When and where to watch the cult movie?". But the production was good enough that I came back for season 2, and I’m glad I did. Instead, the second season of Borrasca doubles down on the first season’s ending, and in doing so redeems and justifies it. Valley Heat is podcasting at its most gleefully independent, with the kind of premise that would be very difficult to pitch to an executive, but that is impossible to stop listening to. Our hapless but endearing narrator finds himself in a series of increasingly difficult dilemmas with his neighbors and family, almost always as a result of his own stupid choices. Give it a try and you too will become heavily invested in the dramas of the Rancho Equestrian neighborhood of Burbank, and all the weirdos who live there.

Non-American Hanukkah films are few and far between, and, admittedly, it is stretching the definition of the holiday movie to include Luca Guadagnino’s romantic classic in our list. You could argue that scene embodies the holiday’s themes of endurance and belief in a brighter future. Anyway, it’s a great film, and it’s got Hanukkah in it, so it stays in. Bruce Willis managed to solidify himself as one of the greatest action stars of the time in one of the best Christmas movies ever made. Now, many will disagree with this being called a Christmas movie, but they'd be wrong, as the holiday is intrinsic to the plot.

Better Watch Out takes place exclusively in an upscale family home that, like the house in Home Alone, witnesses incredible brutality and horror. The difference is that Better Watch Out is supposed to be the disturbing tale of a deranged child who lives to cause unimaginable pain while Home Alone is supposed to be a nice slapstick Christmas comedy for children. Miller is the perfect combination of precocious moppet and remorseless mass murderer, the cross between Kevin McAllister and Patrick Bateman we never knew we needed. There’s something inherently creepy about child stars and children in movies. But before Better Watch Out becomes a fiendishly clever twist on Home Alone it toys with being a lean, economical home invasion thriller.
I say that because there's a twist that happens in the story and it goes in a direction that was quite brave and I'm sure even Hitchcock would have tipped his hat. Peckover paints a pretty disturbing picture of what happens when heavy paint cans smash into a person’s face even when you don’t quite see it. The sound and implication, as well as the bloody aftermath, is enough for our minds to fill in the blanks. For the curious, though, the actual science behind Kevin McAllister’s booby traps has been a source of curiosity for years now, and this article and this video make it explicitly clear the toll this “trap” takes on a human face.
